Origin and history
The Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church of Évian-les-Bains, located in the Haute-Savoie department, is a religious building traditionally built between 1260 and 1265. However, there are indications of an older origin during the 13th century, including the presence of the Château de Pierre de Savoie and the choice of Evian as an administrative centre. A papal bubble of 1250 already mentions a cult building dedicated to the "Blessed Mary in her Assumption", confirming her existence on that date. A donation involving John, chaplain d'Eviant, in 1218 to Abbé d'Aulps could even reverse its foundation in the first quarter of the 13th century.
The church adopts a rectangular plane, with a central nave flanked by two sides, a non-bending transept and a flat bedside choir topped by a bell tower. Among its remarkable elements are a 16th century painting by Notre-Dame de Grace and a cross path designed by local contemporary painter Pierre Christin. The building, owned by the municipality, has been partially listed in the Historical Monuments since 1 July 1974, with a specific protection for its bell tower.
Its architecture and furniture reflect both its medieval heritage and later additions, such as the modern cross road. The mention of Evian as an administrative center in the 13th century, coupled with the presence of Savoyard Castle, underscores its historical importance in the region. The classified objects and its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments make it a notable religious and artistic heritage of the Haute-Savoie.
