Origin and history

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Bagnères-de-Luchon, located in Haute-Garonne, finds its origins in the 16th century with a first Romanesque church of cruciform form (24 m x 24 m), dedicated to the Virgin and equipped with a bell tower on three floors. This place of worship housed nine canons as early as 1387 and was surrounded by the communal cemetery in the eighteenth century. Its marble portal in Saint-Béat, decorated with Latin quotations, was preserved during the reconstruction.

The current reconstruction, carried out between 1847 and 1857 by architect Émile Loupot, was motivated by the influx of summer curists. The new 10-metre-long neo-roman building features a unique 45-metre-long nave, an apse bedside, and side chapels. The murals, made by Romain Cazes (1852–56), and the organ Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1870), make it a remarkable artistic ensemble. The west façade, rebuilt in 1897, and the recent restorations (2017) of the paintings and roof reflect its heritage importance.

The church preserves major historical elements: a 1596 classified bell, Merovingian sarcophagi discovered in 1977, and 19th century stained glass windows, including those dedicated to Saint Germaine de Pibrac. The chapels house works by Cazes and Bernard, such as the Chapel Notre-Dame du Rosaire (1867), while the organ, classified in 2016, remains a symbol of local cultural life. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments in 2003, illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolution of the region.

The liturgical furniture, including 15th-15th century statues and 19th century banners, completes this heritage. The paintings of the abside, representing Divine Liturgy, and the Coronation of the Virgin (cracked vault), underline the link between sacred art and thermalism. The local association, alongside the Occitan Region, has made it possible to safeguard these treasures, while revealing the structural challenges of the building.

The church's history also reflects that of Bagneres-de-Luchon: from a medieval place surrounded by its cemetery to a symbol of the 19th century spa town. The successive transformations, from the Merovingian foundations to the contemporary restorations, make it a key witness to the comune and pyrenean identity.
