Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Beaulieu is a 12th-century religious building located in the commune of Beaulieu, Haute-Loire (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). It is characterized by a nave of three vaulted bays in a broken cradle, the first of which supports a small bell tower. His choir, with five bands externally, presents a rare arrangement of three cul-de-four niches, decorated with capitals adapted to the obtuse angles of the straight feet.
The original Romanesque porch was reintegrated into the modern facade, demonstrating a desire to preserve historical architectural elements. The apse, of unusual shape, and the sculptural details of the capitals underscore the artistic importance of this building. The church was classified as historic monuments by order of 4 May 1910, thereby recognizing its heritage value.
Although located in Normandy according to some sources, the official data (Wikipedia and Mérimée database) clearly locate it in Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This geographical confusion could be due to reference errors or homonymies between municipalities with the same name. The building remains a remarkable example of auvergnate Romanesque architecture, marked by structural and decorative peculiarities.
