Mgr Gorrevod de Challand - Bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne
A erected Bonneval in parish (1532).
Origin and history
The church Our Lady of the Assumption of Bonneval-sur-Arc finds its origins in a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, initially dependent on the parish of Bessans. In 1532 the bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Bishop Gorrevod de Challand, erected Bonneval-sur-Arc as an autonomous parish, allowing the chapel to become the local place of worship. Its geographical isolation, especially in the winter, justified this decision to facilitate access to offices for the inhabitants.
In 1646, the building was enlarged by the addition of a bell tower topped by a stone arrow, marking its transformation into a church in its own right. It was officially consecrated on 18 May 1661, after this major work. A century later, between 1869 and 1871, the church underwent a complete modification, followed by a new consecration, reflecting its architectural evolution and its growing importance for the community.
The church was recognized for its historical and religious heritage, culminating in its inscription as historical monuments on 25 October 1972. This classification protects its bell tower, a distinctive architectural symbol of the village. Today, it remains a testimony of the religious and social history of the Maurienne in Savoie.
