Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Vouvant, classified as a historical monument in 1840 by Prosper Mérimée, finds its origins in the 11th century under the impulse of William the Great d'Aquitaine. From this first church, built by Abbé Théodelin of Maillezais, only three spans (the Nef Théodelin) remain, restored in the 1990s and today dedicated to exhibitions. This vestige bears witness to medieval architectural ambition, although partially destroyed.

The second major phase of construction dates back to the second half of the 12th century, with the construction of the choir, the abside, and the two absidioles in a Romanesque style. Fragments of statues, probably from the large extinct western gate (present site of the pharmacy), also remain. King Saint Louis gave thanks to God in 1242 after his victory over the Lusignans, marking his political and religious importance.

The Wars of Religion (XVIth-17th centuries) ravaged Vouvant: the priory of St Mary was destroyed, and the church, whose vaults collapsed at the beginning of the 17th century, was reduced to its choir and side chapels. In 1656, the bishop of La Rochelle described a "very beautiful and vast church once, all ruined". The restorations then increased, especially between 1882 and 1890 under the impulse of Abbé Laurent, who rebuilt three spans of the nave, the transept, and replaced the bell tower with an octagonal bell tower.

The church preserves remarkable architectural elements, such as the north portal on two levels: a Romanesque low part (XII century) with sculptures of fabulous characters and creatures, and an upper Gothic part (1458–1464) decorated with scenes of the Supper and Ascension. The coat of arms of Jean de Dunois (1458), Count of Longueville and Lord of Vouvant, are carved there, symbolizing his local influence. The crypt, rediscovered in 1854, houses remains from the 11th to the 13th century, including a Merovingian sarcophagus.

In the 19th century, stained glass was added, and the crypt was restored. In 1940 and 1942, an adjoining building and the land were also classified as historical monuments. In 2017, the clock dial (1908) was replaced by an enamelled model. Today, the church combines medieval heritage and modern restorations, with a priory garden created in 2007 and a crypt equipped with a historical video since 2015.
