Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Thoras, located in the Haute-Loire region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a religious building dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Although located today in the town of Thoras, it was formerly attached to Croisances, as evidenced by some historical sources. Its architecture blends Romanesque elements, visible in the capitals of the triumphal arch and the choir, as well as in the window and modillons of the polygonal abside. The west façade, marked by a chamfer porch and an oculus, also reflects this stylistic duality between the two centuries of construction.
The church is mentioned for the first time in a document written in 1244, which attests to its existence on that date. The present building retains a vaulted cradle span and a pentagonal chorus in cul-de-four, characteristic of late Romanesque churches. Its interior is distinguished by a triumphal arch with carved capitals, while the exterior features a polygonal apse decorated with modillons. These architectural details suggest a progressive construction, probably influenced by the artistic evolutions of the period.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 29 September 1969, the church now belongs to the town of Thoras. Its listing in the inventory of historic monuments highlights its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in local history. Available sources, such as the Merimée base or Wikipedia, confirm its importance in the religious and cultural landscape of the Haute-Loire, while noting a sometimes ambiguous location between Thoras and the former commune of Croisances.
