Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Immaculée-Conception de Buffières is a religious monument located in the commune of Belmont-sur-Rance. Although its name evokes a Marian dedication, the sources available do not specify its architectural style or the circumstances of its foundation. Its name suggests a consecration to the Immaculate Conception, a dogma proclaimed in the nineteenth century, but this does not allow us to date with certainty its construction or possible transformations.

Both rural and Buffières churches played a central role in the lives of local communities, particularly in Occitanie. They served as a place of worship, assembly and identity marker for the inhabitants. In the absence of accurate historical data, it is difficult to trace its evolution, but these buildings generally reflect the religious and social history of the territories where they rise.
