Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de la Clarté, located in the heart of the village of Beuzec-Cap-Sizun, is a 17th century religious building, built in granite in a late Gothic style and classical elements. Its irregular plan includes a five-span nave with low sides, a transept, a polygonal apse and a southern chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Clarté. The tower, surmounted by a bell tower reminiscent of Pont-Croix and Quimper, bears engraved dates (1648, 1655, 1680) bearing evidence of the construction phases. A south porch decorated with a statue of the Virgin and Child and an outside staircase leading to the bells complete the whole.

The monument preserves traces of its older origin, with parts dating from the 16th century (turn, nave, transept), as evidenced by the inscription "LAN MIL VCLII (1552) GUIFURON". The seventeenth century saw major changes, documented by dates and names of rectors (e.g. M. I. Moreau in 1632, M. I. Riou in 1648 and 1655). A fire in 1936 partially destroyed the building, but the subsequent restoration preserved old masonries and furniture (retreadables, confessionals). Ranked a Historical Monument in 1937, the church is associated with two fountains: Notre-Dame de la Clarté (1624) and Saint-Budoc (1760).

The parish enclosure includes a monumental keranton cross (1883), bearing the inscription O CRUX AVE SPES UNICA, as well as stone fountains, typical of Breton heritage. These edicles, covered with two-sided roofs, house statues of saints. The Fountain Notre-Dame de la Clarté, located 300 metres from the village, and that of Saint-Budoc, 2 km away, highlight the double term of the church, dedicated both to Saint Budoc (bishop) and to the Virgin. The ensemble illustrates post-medieval Breton religious architecture, marked by local influences and strong parish identity.
