Church (Box B 106): Registration by decree of 23 November 1970
Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de la Nativity, located in Brantôme in Périgord, is an emblematic 12th century religious building. It illustrates regional Romanesque architecture with its unique nave, its cul-de-four choir and its square tower, vaulted with a dome on pendants. These elements, including the choir and the dome, have retained their original appearance, offering an authentic testimony of perigordin Romanesque art.
The structure consists of a Romanesque porch partially modified in the seventeenth century, especially in its upper part. The bell tower, positioned at the front of the choir, saw its summit lowered, probably for structural or aesthetic reasons. The church, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 November 1970, now belongs to the commune and embodies the local medieval heritage.
The location of the church, originally associated with Cantillac (Insee code 24064) in the Merimée base, reflects the administrative adjustments of the Dordogne. Its porch and tower, characteristic of small rural churches, underline its central role in the community and spiritual life of the region since the Middle Ages.
