Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation is a religious monument located in Dammaria-les-Lys, Seine-et-Marne (77), near Melun. It is more precisely Place Paul-Bert, in the heart of this commune of Île-de-France. Its geographical location reflects its central role in local life, both spiritual and community.
The origins of the church date back to the late 11th century, when Christianity was established in this region of the present-day Seine and Marne. A first oratory dedicated to the Virgin was erected, marking the beginning of her religious history. This original place of worship testifies to the ancient anchoring of the Christian faith in this area.
The building has undergone several phases of reconstruction and expansion. In 1535, a first major reconstruction was undertaken, followed by a new reconstruction in 1859, which gave it its present form. These successive transformations illustrate the architectural evolution and the growing needs of the local community. The church also houses an organ, still in use, which enriches its cultural and liturgical dimension.
