Origin and history
The church Notre-Dame de Lagastet is located in the commune of Aurice, in the Landes department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This religious monument, built at the initiative of the barons of Estignols, is distinguished by the presence of remarkable heritage elements, including a bentier dating from the Gallo-Roman era and a golden wooden altar, coming from the chapel of the castle today disappeared. These objects bear witness to the historic significance of the site and its connection to the local nobility.
The aisle of plane trees leading to the church leads to a statue of the Virgin, erected according to tradition to prevent the tarnishing of the wells and the disappearance of the sources. Until the beginning of the 20th century, an annual procession honored this statue, illustrating the popular devotion and central role of the church in community life. The association Les Amis de Lagastet today works to restore this heritage, emphasizing its anchor in history and collective memory.
The building also preserves traces of past architecture and religious practices, as evidenced by liturgical objects and local accounts associated with the miraculous statue. These elements make it a place of both religious, historical and cultural heritage, marked by centuries of traditions and beliefs shared by the inhabitants of Aurice and the surrounding area.
