Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Prosperité church, also known as Notre-Dame de Montferrand, is a former Catholic collegiate church located in the historic district of Montferrand, now integrated into Clermont-Ferrand. Its origin dates back to the transformation of an intra-mural castral chapel, authorized in the 14th century to prevent the inhabitants from coming out of the ramparts during the Hundred Years War. The parish was officially installed in this chapel, originally dedicated to Nostra Dona and served by canons.

The building was built over more than two centuries, marked by two major phases. Between 1340 and 1390, the choir surmounted by an arrow and the beginning of the nave were erected, in a characteristic southern Gothic style. The second phase, from 1450 to 1560, saw the completion of the nave, the addition of side chapels, and the elevation of the western gate flanked by two towers. Only one tower remains today, the other having been destroyed during the Revolution.

In the 16th century, notable arrangements were made, including a clock carved in the rock of the bell tower and the melting of three bells. The present furniture comes largely from churches destroyed during the Revolution. The building, classified as a historic monument in 1846, bears witness to the architectural and urban adaptations associated with medieval conflicts and parish needs. Its three-sided bedside and unique nave make it a remarkable example of Southern Gothic.

The history of the church is related to Countess G., wife of Robert IV Dauphin d'Auvergne, whose charter of 1196 prohibited clerics from residing in the city, forcing religious buildings to settle outside the ramparts. Only the castle chapel, close to the dungeon, was then tolerated. This constraint will later explain the inhabitants' demand for an intramural parish, leading to the transformation of the castral chapel.

Today, the Church of Our Lady of Prosperity remains a symbol of the religious and medieval heritage of Clermont-Ferrand. Its architecture, marked by the vagaries of wars and revolutions, reflects the social and urban evolutions of Montferrand, a former independent city before its attachment to Clermont in the 17th century.
