Origin and history
The Church of Our Lady of Saux, located in Montpezat-de-Quercy, is a religious building built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It was a place of pilgrimage before being disused. Its architecture includes a four-span nave, a flat bedside choir, and characteristic domes of the 15th or early 16th century, resting on pendants. The door and its lock, as well as traces of wall paintings in the nave, also date from the 15th century.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 25 April 1949, the church today belongs to the municipality of Montpezat-de-Quercy. The domes, composed of concentric seats, and decorative elements such as murals testify to its artistic and historical importance. Although disused, its structure, including a bell tower and protected elements, remains a remarkable vestige of medieval religious architecture in Occitanie.
The location of the building at 2595 Route de Saux is considered satisfactory (note of 8/10 for accuracy). The church illustrates the role of places of worship in the rural communities of Quercy, where pilgrimages and religious gatherings structured social and spiritual life in the Middle Ages. Its present state and classification make it a heritage to be preserved, reflecting both local crafts and religious practices of the past.
