Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de Termes is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. Built mainly in the 3rd quarter of the 12th century, it underwent minor modifications in the 19th century, including the displacement of its portal (from the south facade to the west in 1880), the piercing of new windows, and structural repairs such as the elevation of the north dropper wall in 1890. Its architecture is characterized by a unique nave and a flat bedside of the same width, separated by double arches. The bell tower, located above the western gable wall, is considered to be contemporary of the original construction.

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1951, recognizing its heritage value. The modifications of the 19th century, although limited, adapted the building to the liturgical and structural needs of the period without fundamentally altering its Romanesque character. The bellton, of barlong shape, is pierced with bays in the middle of each side, adding a singularity to this rural monument. Owned by the commune, the church remains a symbol of local religious and architectural heritage.

The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) underline its importance in the landscape of historical monuments of Aude. Its inscription in 1951 protects elements such as the nave, the bedside, and the bell tower, while its location in an Occitan village makes it a witness to medieval religious traditions and their evolution in modern times. No information is available on any sponsors or artisans involved in its construction or transformation.
