Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines church, located in Pontrieux, Brittany, is a historic monument built between 1840 and 1843 according to the plans of architect Bertrand Le Pescheur. It embodies the neoclassical style of the time, visible in its grey granite facade, structured in three parts: a central door framed by doric pilasters and surmounted by a pediment, flanked by two side windows in the middle of the hangar. Originally, a small enclosure with a bahut wall and a grid preceded the building, which has now disappeared. The church also symbolizes the creation of the parish of Pontrieux in 1801, born from the merger of two old truves.

The interior of the church, consistent with its exterior architecture, was enriched in the 20th century by two major works: a triptych painted by Simone Pillet in 1934 in the choir, and a set of glass windows made by Job Guével in 1946. These additions are harmoniously integrated into the original style. The building also houses a stand organ built by Jean-Baptiste Claus in 1878, as well as a set of protected movable objects. The church, owned by the commune, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 8 October 2021, including its plate plot.

The location of the church, near the Trieux, and its architecture reflect the urban and religious transformations of Pontrieux in the 19th century. His neoclassical plan, marked by rigorous symmetry and sober decorative elements, illustrates the aesthetic canons of the time, while meeting the liturgical needs of a newly unified parish. Local materials, such as grey granite, highlight its anchoring in the Breton heritage.

The building was fully protected in 2021, recognizing its heritage value for both its architecture and its furniture. The subsequent artistic interventions (triptych, glass windows, organ) show a desire to preserve and enrich this place of worship, while respecting its historical identity. Today, the church remains a symbol of Pontrieux's religious and architectural memory.
