Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-en-sa-Nativity of Puellemontier is a Gothic-style religious building, located in the commune of Puellemontier, now integrated into Rives Dervoises. Its construction dates back to the 13th century, a period marked by the rise of Gothic architecture in Europe, characterized by vaults on cross-dogives and broken arches. This monument illustrates the importance of parish churches in the medieval organization of rural territories, serving as both a place of worship, a community gathering and a symbol of local ecclesiastical power.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone major changes, especially in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. These changes reflect the evolution of liturgical needs, artistic tastes and construction techniques. The 16th century, marked by the wars of Religion and the Renaissance, was able to bring new decorative or structural elements, while the 19th century, period of restoration of the heritage in France, probably saw work of consolidation or beautification. These successive changes reflect the continued vitality of the monument in the life of the community.
The Church of Notre-Dame-en-sa-Nativity was classified as a historical monument by order of 12 June 1992. This official protection recognizes its exceptional heritage value, both architecturally and historically. The classification covers the entire building, identified under cadastral reference C 71, and highlights its role in local and regional history. Today, this monument remains a cultural and identity landmark for the inhabitants of Rives Dervoises and Haute-Marne.
