Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Puisseaux is an ancient prioral-secure church dependent on the order of Saint-Augustin. His choir, dating from the 12th century, precedes the construction of the nave, realized a little later, then reworked in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is distinguished by its bell tower, an architectural singularity in the Loiret department, where no other religious building has this characteristic. The church was listed as a Historic Monument in 1862, demonstrating its early heritage importance.
The priory of Puiseaux was affiliated with the canons of Saint-Victor, an influential congregation in the region. Its settlement in this village of Gâtinais, on the border between Beauce and Puisaye, reflects the expansion of religious orders in the Orléana countryside in the Middle Ages. The region, then marked by a rural economy and river exchanges via the Loire and its tributaries, saw these priories play a central role in the spiritual and social supervision of the local populations.
The state's protection of the church in 1862 was part of a broader movement to preserve the French medieval heritage, which was then threatened by the urban and rural transformations of the 19th century. Puiseaux, like many communes of Loiret, thus preserves a major vestige of its religious history, linked to the Augustinian heritage and late Romanesque architecture. Today, the building remains an identity landmark for the municipality, despite the lack of details about its current use (cult, visits, or other functions).
