Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-Sainte-Croix de Bray-sur-Seine, located in the Seine-et-Marne department in Île-de-France, finds its origins in the 3rd quarter of the 10th century. The original building, destroyed by a fire in 978, was rebuilt at the end of the 10th century, then partially rebuilt in 1165 in a Romanesque style. Consecrated in 1169 by the Archbishop of Sens Guillaume de Blois, she became a collegiate under the name of Notre-Dame after the installation of a chapter of canons in 1174, authorized by Henry I the Liberal, Count of Champagne. The choir was then arranged to accommodate these canons, while the oldest parts (pillars, walk-in, radial chapels) date from the 12th century.

During the French Revolution (1789), the chapter was dissolved, and the church became parish again under the double name of Notre-Dame and Sainte-Croix. Its architecture combines Romanesque elements (nef with three ships, broken cradle of the 15th century) and Renaissance additions (16th century lateral chapels). The bell tower, reinforced with foothills, dominates the western facade, while the interior retains remarkable furniture, such as the baptismal fonts of 1570 or the 18th century stalls.

Ranked a historic monument in 1945, the church also houses an organ inaugurated in 1599 by Pierre Caste, whose buffet was classified in 2012. Its history reflects the religious and architectural evolutions of the region, from its medieval foundation to its post-revolutionary transformations. The coat of arms of the Savoie-Nemours family, lords of Bray in the 16th-17th century, recall its anchor in local history.

The liturgical furniture includes statues from the 16th-17th centuries (Saint Anthony, Virgin with Child, Saint Roch) and classified objects, such as the wrought iron choir fence (15th century). These elements testify to the artistic richness of the building, marked by centuries of devotion and seigneurial patronage. Today, the church remains a symbol of the religious and historical heritage of Bray-sur-Seine.
