Origin and history
The Saint-Germain-d'Auxerre church, located in Rémalard, Normandy, is a religious monument dating back to the 12th century. The current building consists of a nave with bottoms and a circular bedside, but it was originally composed of a unique nave of which only the western wall remains, pierced by a Romanesque portal. Two small chapels near the choir and a vaulted sanctuary in cul-de-four completed the primitive structure.
In the 15th century, major changes were made: the north side was high, followed shortly afterwards by the south side, covered with small attices perpendicular to the main axis. These attic, visible externally by pinions, correspond to each span. The octagonal batteries separating the nave from the lower side support arches in third-point, characteristic of the 15th century, with typical mouldings of this period.
The church was classified as historic monuments by order of 25 September 1930, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune of Rémalard and remains an architectural testimony of stylistic evolutions between the Romanesque and Gothic periods. Its Romanesque portal and Gothic elements illustrate this transition, while its location in the heart of the village makes it a local historic landmark.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in Norman religious heritage. The Merimée base lists the building under Insee code 61345, confirming its anchoring in the Orne territory. The approximate address, 1 Rue du Prieuré, places the church in a modest urban setting but full of history, reflecting the central role of parish churches in medieval and modern community life.
