Origin and history

The church Saint-Julien de Montpezat found its origins in the 13th century, with the construction of a primitive church composed of two side chapels vaulted with cross-heads. These Gothic elements, such as carved or not, bear witness to a marked medieval artistic influence. The chapels, still visible today, form the oldest nucleus of the building.

In the 18th century, the church underwent major transformations: enlargement, repairs, and addition of a flat-bed choir decorated with a wooden master altar. A square bell tower, housing the sacristy on the ground floor, is erected south side. The bronze bell, dated 1530, attests to an ongoing cult activity since the Renaissance. These modifications reflect the adaptation of the building to the liturgical needs of the time.

In 1998, the discovery of 14th century murals revealed an exceptional setting: an allegory of vices, stylistically close to the painted ensembles of the Hautes-Alpes and Nice County. These frescoes, though fragmentary, offer rare light on medieval religious iconography in Provence. The church, fully protected since 2003 (inscription to the Historical Monuments), remains a composite testimony of seven centuries of local history.

Located in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in Montagnac-Montpezat, the church Saint-Julien illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolution of a territory marked by exchanges between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Its dual identity, both Gothic and Baroque, makes it an emblematic heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
