Origin and history

The Protestant church of Balbronn, located in the Lower Rhine, is a building whose architectural chronology extends mainly between the 12th and 15th centuries. Cited as early as the 12th century, its rectangular nave and its semi hors-oeuvre bell tower testify to this period. The west base, attributed by some to a pre-Roman era (XI century?), and the bell tower dated the second half of the 12th century, reveal a progressive construction. Subsequent changes, notably in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, marked its evolution, such as the recast of the nave gate around 1500.

From 1687, the introduction of simultaneum (sharing of the place of worship between Catholics and Protestants) divided the space: the choir was reserved for Catholics, while the nave was reserved for Protestants. This sharing lasted until the beginning of the 20th century, when Catholics built their own building after the suppression of the simultaneum. A major restoration, led by architect Gustave Weigend in 1907-1908, concerned mainly the choir, financed by F. Lorenz Falk, a benefactor who made a fortune in the United States. The last restoration was in 1976.

The church houses remarkable elements, such as a bell of 1552 classified as a historical monument, a glass window evoking Emperor Frédéric Barberousse, and an organ whose buffet, the work of Jean André Silbermann (1747), is completed by an instrument of the Link brothers (1908). Four funeral monuments, including Pastor Johannes Haüss and Euphrosine von Schauwenburg, as well as Protestant liturgical objects (calice, patena, pastoral pulpit) enrich his heritage. The building, which has been included in the additional inventory of historical monuments since 1990, illustrates the religious and architectural history of Alsace.

Architecturally, the northeast-facing temple has a unique nave extended by a flat bedside. The bell tower, composed of stone and sandstone bells, is crowned with a frieze of arches in the middle of the hanger and geminied berries. The choir, vaulted with warheads, is flanked by lateral chapels vaulted with ridges. The wall of the fortified cemetery, partially preserved, recalls its defensive role past. The stained glass windows, including the one depicting the glorious Christ, and the sculptures (man's head in high relief on the southern pilastre) highlight its rich decor.

The site also retains traces of its funerary use, with tombstones discovered in 1861, such as that of Hans von Mittelhausen (now lost). The cost of 19th-century restorations, amounting to DM 31 839.52, reflects the investment made for its preservation. Today, Balbronn's Protestant church, a mixed property (municipal and private), remains a symbol of the Alsatian heritage, mixing medieval, reformed and architectural history.
