Origin and history
The church Saint-Aignant de Torsac, located in the Charente department, finds its origins in an ancient religious context. As early as the eighth century, Torsac housed an archpriest dependent on the bishopric of Angoulême, although the current building did not retain any trace of that period. The nave, built at the end of the twelfth century, and the transept with its apse, erected around the middle of the same century, bear witness to its Romanesque heritage. These architectural elements, such as the dome on trunks or carved capitals (including one representing a character playing harp against a bird), illustrate local medieval religious art.
In the 15th century, murals adorning the cul-de-four of the abside were made, representing in particular a Christ in majesty. The façade was also redesigned at the end of this century, while a podium was added to the west in the 16th century. These changes reflect the stylistic and liturgical developments of the time, while preserving the original Romanesque structure. The bell tower, placed above the dome, completes this architectural ensemble marked by centuries of transformation.
By order of 23 July 1973, the church now belongs to the municipality of Torsac. Its state of conservation and its protected elements (paintings, capitals, cupola) make it a precious testimony of sacred art in Angoumois, between Romanesque heritage and Gothic or Renaissance additions. The accuracy of its location is estimated a priori satisfactory, according to the available data.
