Origin and history

Saint-André de Ruffec Church is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Ruffec in the Charente department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 12th century, it illustrates the Romanesque architecture of the period, with a richly carved facade and a portal composed of three adorned archvolts. This monument demonstrates the importance of churches in medieval social and spiritual organization, serving as a place of worship, gathering and symbol of power for local communities.

The facade of the church is distinguished by its sculpted decoration, including a central gate framed by two arches in full hanger forming niches. The one on the left houses a rare representation: a bed decorated with an elongated character and a quadruped with a human head, a symbol perhaps allegorical or religious. Above, an imposing window is flanked by two galleries of six niches with statues, including twelve apostles. The pinion culminates with a medallion depicting Christ surrounded by angels, highlighting the sacred dimension of the building.

Classified as historical monuments since 20 March 1903, the Saint-André church is the property of the commune of Ruffec. Its classification specifically concerns the facade, recognized for its artistic and heritage value. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as an emblematic building of the Romanesque heritage in Poitou-Charentes, now integrated into the New Aquitaine region.

The precise address of the church, according to the Merimée base, is the Place du Duc de Saint Simon in Ruffec (code Insee 16292). Although the information on its accessibility (visits, rentals) is not detailed in the sources, its status as a historic monument makes it a potentially open site to the public, subject to municipal provisions. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated at 6/10 according to Monumentum, indicating a priori satisfactory location.
