Origin and history

The church of Saint-André de Saint-André-d-Hébertot came into being in the 11th century, when the count-bishop of Lisieux Hébert founded the parish and built the present building. In the 13th century, in 1240, his successor William II of the Pont-de-L Close to the local castle, it acquired the status of seigneurial church, while remaining under the episcopal authority of Lisieux, then the diocese of Bayeux and Lisieux. Traces of its medieval history include 12th-century Romanesque vaults and a northern chapel with a flamboyant 16th-century Gothic emplacement.

The church, studied and photographed by historian Eugène Lefèvre-Pontalis in the 19th century, underwent restorations during this period, especially on its neo-Gothic structure and sacristy. Ranked a historic monument by decree of 21 March 1910, it illustrates Norman architectural evolution, blending nave lambrissed, square bell tower with octagonal arrow, and unaxed choir with vaults with tapered joints. Its location, in the middle of the communal cemetery below the road and the remains of a priory, highlights its anchoring in the religious and seigneurial landscape of the country of Auge.

The site, marked by masonry covers and various foothills, also reveals topographical adaptations: the base of the bell tower and the baptismal fonts raise up the western entrance, while the flat bedside, adorned with modillons and foothills, retains coats of arms on a key of arch. The proximity of the hiking trails (GR 26 and 223) and the Paris-Caen motorway makes it today a point of accessible heritage interest, bearing witness to nine centuries of local history.
