Origin and history

The Saint-Antoine de Conty church, located in the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region, is an emblematic building of the flamboyant Gothic style, built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Ranked as early as 1840 on the first list of historical monuments and finally protected in 1908, it embodies the medieval and Renaissance heritage of Picardia. Its history is marked by looting during the wars of Religion (1575, 1589) and conflicts with Spain (1636), whose traces of bullets remain on the bell tower.

The present church replaces a building attested from the twelfth century, enlarged in 1229 thanks to John de Conty, local lord. The bell tower, dating from the 14th century, houses a statue of St.Antoine Ermite and monumental gargoyles. The western facade, redesigned in 1869 by architect Victor Delefortrie in a neo-Gothic style, contrasts with the original flamboyant elements, such as stained glass windows and Renaissance pendant vaults. Inside, a 17th century altar, a 15th century Christ, and statues of François Cressent (from the Carmelites of Amiens) adorn the choir.

The monument underwent a major restoration between 2021 and 2024, covering roofing, masonry and stained glass. Its Latin cross plan (32.70 m long, 15.50 m high under vault) and its carved decorations — dragons, sphinxes, and religious scenes — bear witness to its artistic importance. The Saint-Antoine fountain, linked to a local legend of animal healing, and the lateral portal adorned with statues of saints (Adrien, Sébastien) complete this remarkable ensemble.

Ranked among the historical monuments of the Somme, Saint-Antoine Church illustrates the stylistic transitions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, while bearing the stigma of the conflicts that marked Picardia. Its 1912 organ (Félix Van den Brande) and its Louis XV grilles add to its rich heritage. Historical sources, such as the works of Robert de Guyencourt (1893) or Father Daire (1865), document his architectural and cultural evolution.
