Origin and history

Saint-Aubin des Ponts-de-Cé is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Ponts-de-Cé, Maine-et-Loire. Originally built in the year 1003 under the joint reign of Robert II the Pious and Foulques Nerra, it was built by Abbé Hubert. This monument, marked by a long history, underwent major transformations in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries, reflecting the architectural and religious evolutions of these periods.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 16 February 1903, the church experienced a tragedy on 27 December 1973, when a fire almost completely ravaged its structure, leaving only its walls standing. The restoration, entrusted to architect Henri Enguehard, was a major technical challenge. The Ateliers Perrault Frères, responsible for the reconstruction of the structure, innovated by preparing all the elements in the workshop before going back to the site in just three days, a performance praised for its efficiency.

The restoration work began in 1975, and after nearly twenty years of effort, the church regained its cult function in 1984, thanks to a renovation carried out under the aegis of the Historical Monuments. This building, owned by the commune of Ponts-de-Cé, today embodies both a remarkable architectural heritage and a resilience to the hazards of history.
