Origin and history

The church Saint-Barthélémy de Chénérailles, located in the Creuse department in New Aquitaine, was built in the thirteenth century, probably under the impulse of the priest Barthélemy de la Place (died 1300), considered its founder. It initially depended on the Abbey of Bénévent, close to the municipality. Its architecture is characterized by a nave of three spans extended by a flat bedside choir, surmounted by an arrow. Two gates, one to the north and the other to the west, mark its entrances, the latter being decorated with a niche once housing a statuette.

In the 15th century, a seigneurial chapel was added south side of the nave by the family of Etangsannes, reflecting the local influence of this lineage. The choir, vaulted in a dogive cross, preserves murals depicting four scenes from the New Testament: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Transfiguration and the Resurrection. These frescoes, although described as "modern" in some sources, are part of the medieval religious artistic tradition. The building, typical of the Haute Marche, blends Gothic elements and subsequent additions.

The church houses remarkable furniture, including a 14th century limestone funeral plaque depicting the funeral of Barthélemy de la Place, classified in 1862. Other notable pieces include an 18th-century high altar, 17th-century stalls and panelling, as well as a limestone statue of the Virgin and Child (14th century), locally known as Notre-Dame-de-Chénérailles. These elements, classified or listed as historic monuments between 1955 and 2002, reflect the heritage richness of the site.

Protected since 20 October 1960 by an inscription in the title of historical monuments, the church Saint-Barthélémy illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of a rural religious building, marked by its anchoring in local history and its link with the Abbey of Bénévent. Its central location in the village, opposite the town hall, highlights its historic role as a place of worship and community gathering.
