Origin and history
The church of Saint-Barthélemy de Cussy is a Catholic religious building in the municipality of Cussy, Calvados, Normandy. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, it is a typical example of medieval ecclesiastical architecture of this period. Its designation as historic monuments, effective since 21 May 1927, reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this local heritage.
Like many rural churches in Normandy, Saint Barthélemy Church probably played a central role in the community life of Cussy. In the Middle Ages, these buildings served not only as places of worship but also as gathering points for the inhabitants, marking the social, agricultural and religious rhythms of the population. Their construction often reflected local resources and know-how, while integrating stylistic elements characteristic of their time.
The protection of the building in 1927 is part of a broader approach to safeguarding the French architectural heritage, initiated in the early twentieth century. This inscription ensures the preservation of the original elements of the church, while providing a legal framework for possible restoration work. Today, Saint Barthélemy Church remains a symbol of the rich historical past of Cussy and the Norman region.
