Origin and history

The church Saint-Barthélemy de Poyartin, located in the Landes department, finds its origins in the fourteenth century with the construction of its oldest part. This religious monument, marked by the turbulent history of the region, bears witness to the architectural evolutions and defensive needs of the medieval era.

In the 15th century, during the Hundred Years' War, a fortified tower was erected, equipped with archeries and a brace, reflecting the military tensions of the period. This defensive strengthening illustrates the adaptation of churches to conflict zones, where they also served as shelters for local populations.

The 16th century saw the enlargement of the church with the addition of two collaterals and the laying of a vault with liernes and thirdons, characteristic of flamboyant Gothic architecture. An inscription on the arch key ("an MVCXXXVIII ceste chapeles est faicte") attests to works dated 1538. These developments reflect the prosperity that was restored after the war.

Between the 17th and 20th centuries, the church underwent major modifications and repairs. In the 17th century, a north porch was built, and the tower opened onto the nave. The bell tower, damaged repeatedly (especially by lightning), was repaired 10 times between 1779 and 1959, revealing the conservation challenges posed by weather and weather. In 1905, the structure, threatened by collapse, was the subject of urgent work.

The church has been listed as historic monuments since 13 January 1998, recognizing its heritage value. In 1999, a major restoration concerned the main structure and the bell tower, preserving its oriental-style bulb, covered with slates and zinc, and its massive foothills. These interventions underline the continued commitment to safeguard it.

Inside, the church houses remarkable works: a 19th-century painting depicting Saint Vincent de Paul (inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1983), a mural by Duvigneau (1946) commemorating the return of prisoners of war, and stained glass by Gustave-Pierre Dragrant (1907), master Bordeaux glassmaker. The high altar, originally designed for the Cathedral of Aire-sur-Adour in 1898, finally found its place in Poyartin in 1960 after a turbulent journey.

The Debierre organ (Nantes), with 5 games and a transposor keyboard, completes this heritage. Its history, like that of other elements, illustrates the links between the church, local craftsmanship and liturgical evolutions throughout the centuries.
