Origin and history
The church of Saint-Benoît-et-Saint-Privat de Saint-Béat has its origins in the foundation of a Benedictine monastery in the eighth century, given to the priory of Lézat in 1003. This religious site, originally linked to monastic life, evolves with the construction of the current building in the 12th century, after 1132. The church then adopts a grounded plan, characteristic of Romanesque architecture, and incorporates a historical south porch representing Christ in majesty surrounded by the Tetramorph. This porch, as well as the bell tower with two arches, testify to the artistic and symbolic influence of the period.
In the 14th century, the monastery disintegrated, and the church became a simple parish, losing its original monastic function. Inside, the vaulted cul-de-four apse, accompanied by two apsidioles, and the Romanesque decorations of the tiles, capitals and column bases illustrate the know-how of medieval artisans. A major restoration took place around 1880, marked by the demolition of the old sacristy and the building of a new one. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1994, the church remains a preserved example of Southern Romanesque art.
The building, owned by the commune of Saint-Béat-Lez, is distinguished by its sculptural heritage and its history linked to both Benedictine monastic life and the parish community. Its Romanesque porch, decorated with Christian symbols, and its delicate architecture make it an emblematic monument of the Haute-Garonne, reflecting the religious and architectural transitions of the Middle Ages in Occitanie.
