Origin and history

Saint-Bon Church is a Catholic church located in the commune of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise, Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dedicated to Saint Bonitus (or Bonnet de Clermont), bishop of Clermont in the 6th century, it is an emblematic example of Savoyard Baroque art. His history dates back to a first Romanesque construction, probably dated from the fourteenth century, according to the research of Abbés Hudry and Debernard. The present building is the result of a major transformation between 1650 and 1673, giving it its characteristic Baroque style.

The church has been listed as historic monuments since 4 October 1972, recognizing its heritage value. In 1991, significant restoration work was undertaken, including the renovation of the floor, pillars and woodwork by drowning walls, in preparation for the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville. These interventions preserved its interior decor, typical of Savoyard baroque, while adapting to major events.

The church of Saint-Bon belongs to the parish of Saint-François-de-Sales - Val Vanoise, in the dean of Moutiers. Historically, it was a parish in its own right in the ancient ecclesiastical division of the Tarentaise. Its architecture and furniture reflect the religious and artistic influence of the region, marked by a mixture of local traditions and Italian Baroque contributions.

Historical sources, such as the works of Marius Hudry and Henri Debernard, underline his central role in the spiritual and community life of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise. The building thus embodies centuries of religious and architectural history, from its medieval origins to its consecration as a protected heritage.
