Origin and history

The Saint-Bonnet church of Saint-Bonnet, located in the Charente department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, presents an architecture combining the 12th and 15th centuries. Its cross-shaped plane, with a flat bedside, reveals a nave composed of two spans of the 15th century, diverted from the main axis. These spans are vaulted with veins and ivy, while a third, narrower span preserves Romanesque vaults based on ancient columns. The transept and the choir, covered with 13th century Gothic vaults, are supported by columnettes decorated with foliage capitals.

The western portal, dating back to the 15th century, is distinguished by its pinnacles, prismatic mouldings and scallop motifs. A square bell tower, pierced by trilobed gemini windows, overlooks the building. The vault of the choir bears the inscription of the year 1682, showing subsequent changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The church, dependent on the priory of Barbezieux, was restored in 1813 and 1880. Its portal and western façade were listed at the Historic Monuments in 1948, followed by an integral protection of the building (excluding sacristy) in 2018.

According to the sources, the church was originally built at the end of the 13th century, although its oldest elements date back to the 12th century. The successive changes, especially in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, enriched its architectural heritage. The date of 1682, engraved at the cross of the transept, probably marks a phase of renovation or consolidation of the structure. Today, the building belongs to the commune of Saint-Bonnet and remains a testimony to the stylistic and religious evolutions of the region.
