Origin and history
Église Saint-Caprais de Marcoux is a Catholic church located in Beauville, Lot-et-Garonne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 12th century, it is distinguished by its semicircular apse preceded by a vaulted span in a cradle, framed by two double arches. The sanctuary is preceded by a vaulted transept on a dowry cross, while the walls, pillars and capitals adorned with superimposed leaves and fantastic animals date from the primitive building. The more recent buttresses were added later.
The so-called Marcoux, where the church stands, forms a butt-witness connected by an isthmus to a greenhouse. This site also includes a presbytery, an adjacent cemetery and the remains of a castle, highlighting its historical and strategic importance. The building was classified as historic monuments by order of 20 September 1922, thereby recognizing its heritage value.
Available sources, including Monumentum and Wikipedia, mention remarkable architectural elements such as carved capitals and the structure of the transept. The church, owned by the commune of Beauville, remains a major testimony of Romanesque religious architecture in Agenais. Its ranking in 1922 makes it a protected monument, open to visit according to local practical information.
