Origin and history

The church Saint-Clair de Gouts is a Gothic building built in the 13th century on the town of Allons, in Lot-et-Garonne (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). From a rectangular three-span plan and flat bedside, it was profoundly redesigned in the 15th century with the addition of fortifications: crenellated dropural walls and bell tower-wall with a defensive courtyard. His assommoir still protects the front door today, testifying to his past defensive role.

Inside, the church preserves 16th century murals representing the Crucifixion, as well as neo-Gothic archatures in trompe l'oeil adorning the choir. The site includes an adjacent cemetery surrounded by a wall of fortified fence, and three so-called miraculous fountains located on the edge of the creek of Ciron, which once contributed to the reputation of the sanctuary.

Classified as a historical monument by order of 3 February 1995, the protection covers the church, the ruins of its sacristy, the cemetery with its porch, and the three fountains. The fence wall, although recently altered by a contested renovation, retains traces of its original defensive function. These elements illustrate the evolution of the site, both a place of worship, protection and pilgrimage.

The precise location of the church is 1829 Chemin de Gouts, 47420 Let's go, in a rural setting marked by the Ciron valley. The building, a mixed property (municipal and private), remains an architectural testimony of medieval and modern adaptations in Aquitaine, between spirituality and defensive necessities.
