Sixteenth century swimming pool in the North Chapel: inscription by decree of 19 May 1927

Origin and history

The church Saint-Denis d'Aillières is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Aillières-Beauvoir, Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the 16th century, it bears witness to the religious architecture of this period, although little detailed information on its overall structure is available in current sources. Only its swimming pool, located in the 16th century North Chapel, is specifically mentioned as a remarkable element.

The church's liturgical swimming pool, located in the northern chapel, was listed as historical monuments by order of 19 May 1927. This architectural element, typical of medieval churches and the Renaissance, served the purification rites. The building is now owned by the municipality and private owners, but its current access and uses (visits, rentals, etc.) are not specified in the available sources.

The Sarthe department, where Aillières-Beauvoir is located, was in the 16th century an area marked by the religious and social transformations associated with the Renaissance and the Wars of Religion. Local churches, such as Saint-Denis, played a central role in community life, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering and a symbol of ecclesiastical power. Their architecture often reflected the artistic influences of the time, sometimes combining late Gothic elements and renaissant innovations.
