Origin and history
Saint-Denis de Mondrainville is a Catholic church in the Calvados department, in the commune of Mondrainville, Normandy. Dating mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries, it illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region. According to Arcisse de Caumont, the more recent choir and tower dates back to the 14th century, while the rest of the building is earlier, from the 13th century. This monument was under the patronage of the Plessis-Grimoult Priory, stressing its importance in the local ecclesiastical network.
A notable feature of the church is the presence of an epitaph called "Pierre à Mundret", located on its southern facade. This Latin funerary plaque, classified as an object, is attributed to Archdeacon Mundretus and is dated from the tenth century or earlier. It bears witness to the seniority of the religious site, well before the construction of the current building. The church itself was listed as historic monuments on October 4, 1932, recognizing its heritage value.
The building, owned by the municipality of Mondrainville, is part of an architectural landscape marked by Norman rural churches. Its inscription as historical monuments in 1932 preserved its medieval features, including its Romanesque and Gothic elements. The precise location of the church at 6 Rue Edward Chapman makes it a point of interest for those passionate about history and religious heritage in Lower Normandy (now Normandy).
