Origin and history
The Saint-Denis church of Saint-Denis-d'Anjou is a Catholic building located in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, in an original Romanesque style, before being enlarged in the 16th century with Gothic elements. The building is built on a rocky base, in a high position, which gives it a defensive utility marked by murderers and a spiral staircase leading to the bell tower.
Ranked a historic monument in 1931, the church reveals 16th century murals, discovered during restorations. These frescoes, in excellent condition, are inspired by the Golden Legend, a medieval collection of hagiographic accounts. The tower, visible from the Angers road, illustrates its dual spiritual and defensive role in the local landscape.
The building is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 53210, and its approximate address is 4 Rue de l'Église, in Saint-Denis-d'Anjou. Its classification by decree of 12 September 1931 protects the entire building, testifying to its heritage importance in the department of Mayenne.
