The bell tower: inscription by order of 24 October 1927

Origin and history

The church Saint-Didier de Rigny-sur-Arroux is a religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in Saône-et-Loire, within the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It is dedicated to Saint Didier, a local saint, and is part of the diocese of Autun. Its architecture and history reflect its central role in the spiritual and community life of the region for centuries.

The church was partially protected in 1927, when its bell tower was listed as historical monuments. This ranking reflects its heritage and architectural importance. Today, it remains an active place of worship, attached to the parish of Sainte-Thérèse-de-l'Enfant-Jésus, whose seat is in Gueugnon. It is administered in accordance with the 1905 Law on the Separation of Churches and the State.

The commune of Rigny-sur-Arroux, like many villages of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, saw its church play a key role in the social and religious structure of the local population. Churches in this region, often built or modified between the Middle Ages and the modern era, served as gathering points for church services, religious festivals and community events. Their presence also marked the landscape and strengthened local identity.

The available data do not specify the exact period of construction of the church, but its inscription as a historical monument and its membership in the diocese of Autun suggest an ancient origin. Such churches were generally built or remodeled between the 11th and 19th centuries, depending on the resources and needs of the parishes. Their architecture could evolve over the centuries, integrating Romanesque, Gothic or more recent elements.

Today, the Church of Saint Didier continues to be a place of Catholic worship, while representing a preserved local heritage. Its bell tower, a protected element, is an example of the architectural structures typical of the rural churches of Burgundy. The management of the building is the responsibility of the municipality, in accordance with the laws on public and religious property in France.
