Origin and history
Église Saint-Étienne de Clermont, located in the Haute-Savoie department, is a religious building built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It is distinguished by its neo-classical architecture and its inscription as historical monuments in 1991. The church is intimately linked to local history, especially through the figure of Bishop Gallois de Regard, originally from the commune, who played a prominent role there in the sixteenth century.
Bishop Gallois de Regard, who had his pleasure castle built in Clermont, was at the origin of a major historical event in this church: he gave the clerical tone to Saint Francis de Sales, then 11 years old, on 20 September 1578. He later became an emblematic figure of Savoyard Catholicism. Gallois de Regard died in Annecy in 1582 and his body was buried in the church, reinforcing its heritage and spiritual importance.
In the 19th century, the building was reconstructed or substantially rebuilt, as evidenced by its period of attested construction (3rd quarter of the 19th century). Today, the parish church, owned by the commune, remains an active place of worship and an architectural testimony to the religious and historical heritage of Haute Savoie. Its classification as a historic monument in 1991 highlights its exceptional heritage value, both for its history and its neo-classical style.
The church's location at 45 Impasse de l'Église in Clermont makes it a central point of the village. Its role in the local community, both as a place of prayer and as a memory of Savoyard religious figures, makes it a must-see monument of the diocese of Annecy. Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its protected status and anchor in regional history.
