Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne de Fabrezan, although often associated with Villerouge-la-Crémade, is a religious building built in the 11th and 12th centuries, located in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. It has been classified as historic monuments since 1982, recognizing its heritage value. The building consists of a unique nave extended by a semicircular apse, characteristic of Romanesque architecture. Traces of 12th century murals, although very degraded, suggest an original pictorial decoration covering the whole of the nave and the abside.
The church historically depended on the monastery of Lagrasse, whose abbot had the right of presentation to the cure. The parish of Villerouge, to which it is attached, was part of the Consulate of Fabrezan. The current state of the building reveals subsequent changes, such as foothills added to stabilize walls threatened by land movements. These transformations, as well as the loss of its vault in the cradle (replaced by a panel), testify to the hazards suffered by the building over the centuries.
The remaining frescoes, though fragmentary, represent characters and offer a rare glimpse of medieval mural painting in the Corbières. Their precarious conservation status reflects the damage caused by time and environmental conditions. The church, owned by the municipality of Fabrezan, remains a significant example of the Romanesque religious heritage in Languedoc, despite the lack of documentation on certain aspects of its history.
The classification as a historical monument in 1982 allowed to protect this site, while stressing its importance in the study of art and medieval architecture in Occitanie. Available sources, such as Sophie Ducret's work on Corbières paintings, highlight her role in the regional cultural landscape, although shadow zones persist on its exact evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
