Origin and history

Saint-Étienne de Mareil-Marly Church, located in the Yvelines in Île-de-France, is a religious building dating back to the 13th century. It was built on the site of a first building erected in 1060 for the monks of Coulombs, although only the bases of the bell tower still date from the 12th century. This monument illustrates medieval religious architecture, with a bedside and a nave characteristic of this period.

The church was ranked early in 1853, followed by a second classification in 1935, including the surrounding communal lands. Two major restoration campaigns marked its history: the first, led by architect Eugene Millet between 1872 and 1879, saw the partial reconstruction of the bell tower, the sculpture of capitals and the construction of a stone arrow. The second campaign, carried out by the architect Naples from 1880 to 1885, concerned the renovation of the nave and lower side columns.

The 19th century works also included structural changes, such as the destruction of the northern porch, the reconstruction of the western gable with its foothills, and the sculpture of a large rose. In 1987, an additional restoration was carried out on the laying of the bedside and the western façade. These successive interventions demonstrate the heritage importance of the building and its continued preservation.

The Saint-Étienne church is now owned by the commune of Mareil-Marly. Its architecture, marked by medieval elements and subsequent restorations, makes it a significant example of the religious and architectural heritage of the Yvelines. The protected elements include not only the building itself, but also adjacent communal lands, highlighting its integration into the local landscape.
