Origin and history
The church Saint-Étienne de Roquefeuil is a religious building located in the village of the same name, in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. Built mainly in the 16th century, it features an architecture characteristic of this period, with a unique nave lined with eight side chapels. A short span of choir precedes a semicircular sanctuary, whose apse could date from the late 15th or 16th century. The chorus span is arched on ribs in flat boudin, and a 17th century altarpiece was later added.
To the west, the church is preceded by a porch shifted northward due to the presence of the bell tower, a square tower covered in pavilion. The porch houses a broken arch portal, composed of thirteen harpsichords and surrounded by a salient archvolt. The ebrasations are decorated with columns supporting the mouldings, with carved capitals. This Western portal was listed as historical monuments by order of 7 April 1952, stressing its heritage importance.
The church, owned by the municipality of Roquefeuil, illustrates the rural religious architecture of the region. Its bell tower and porch, typical of the buildings of the period, reflect the stylistic influences of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The decorative elements, such as the capitals and the veins of the vaults, bear witness to local craftsmanship and a desire to embellish places of worship in this part of Languedoc.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as a historical monument and its precise location at the following address: 11 Rue de l'Eglise, 11340 Roquefeuil. The building, although partially protected, remains a representative example of the religious heritage of Aude and Occitanie.
