Origin and history

Saint-Étienne Church is a religious building located in the commune of Clermont, Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is known for its architecture and its role in local history, especially in connection with major religious figures. Classified as a historical monument in 1991, it bears witness to a rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

One of the highlights of this church is the clerical tone of Saint Francis de Sales, then 11 years old, celebrated on September 20, 1578 by Bishop Gallois de Regard, originally from Clermont. The latter, who had built his castle in the commune, was also buried there after his death in Annecy on 4 September 1582. These elements underscore the historical and religious significance of the site.

The Saint-Étienne church is part of a regional context where religious buildings played a central role in community life. In Haute-Savoie, these places were often centres for gathering, praying and transmitting traditions. Their preservation, like that of this church, allows us to understand the evolution of religious and social practices throughout the centuries.
