Origin and history
The church Saint-Eutrope d'Arrenes is a religious building built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century, in the Creuse department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is distinguished by its architecture typical of the late Gothic period, with a rectangular vessel of three spans, the last of which forms a choir with flat bedside. The vaults, decorated with cross-sections of warheads with circular keys, and the niches dug in the walls testify to a marked artisanal know-how. A double swimming pool, carved in the south wall with cave mouldings and braided braces, illustrates the attention paid to liturgical details.
The church once housed a decoration painted on walls and vaults, of which fragments remain: characters partially visible on the north wall of the second span and on the south wall of the choir. These paintings, although degraded, evoke an artistic heritage that has now disappeared. The patronage of the church returned to the Abbey of Bénévent, stressing its anchoring in the local religious network. The building was listed as historic monuments on 26 July 1963, recognizing its heritage value.
Located at 2 Church Street in Arrenes, the church is the property of the municipality. Its registration in the general inventory (Merimée PA00099988) and its precise location, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", make it an accessible and documented monument. The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its role in the religious and architectural landscape of the historic Limousin, now integrated into New Aquitaine.
