Origin and history
The church of Saint-Ferréol in Murol was built in the 1880s by architect Agis-Léon Ledru, replacing a building in ruins. This monument, of neo-Gothic style, is distinguished by its square porch bell tower surmounted by an octagonal arrow. Its architecture reflects the classical influences of the Renaissance, while integrating modern elements for the era, typical of the neo-Gothic movement that sought to reinterpret medieval forms with contemporary techniques.
Inside the church is an exceptional painted decoration, made between 1890 and 1930 by Abbé Léon Boudal. The latter, a major figure in the artistic group called the Murols School, was illustrated by impressionist representations of snowy landscapes. The frescoes, inspired by Renaissance masters, combine classical influences with more modern touches, creating a unique dialogue between tradition and innovation. These works reflect the cultural vitality of the region at the turn of the twentieth century.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 20 March 2006, the church is now the property of the municipality of Murol. Its inscription protects the entire building (cadastre AN 112), stressing its heritage importance both for its architecture and for its interior decor. The location of the church, the Abbé-Boudal Square, pays tribute to its iconic painter, anchoring the monument in the local and artistic history of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
