Origin and history

The Saint-Fiacre church of La Chapelle-Pommier, dedicated to the patron of gardeners, is a Romanesque building built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its originality lies in its bell tower, reinforced in the 14th century by a crenellated defense chamber, reflecting the tensions of the medieval period. Several of his stained glass windows, including the one depicting Saint Peter dated 1882, are the work of artist Jean Besseyrias, adding an artistic touch of the 19th century to this historic monument.

The commune of Champeaux-et-la-Chapelle-Pommier, which emerged from the merger in 1827 of the villages of Champeaux and La Chapelle-Pommier, has had a history marked by the Hundred Years War. In 1377 Bertrand du Guesclin's troops chased the English from the nearby Château des Bernardières, illustrating the conflicts that shaped the region. The church, registered as a historical monument since 2008, bears witness to this rich local history.

The region, which has been part of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park since 1998, is crossed by the Nizonne River, a river whose valley is home to a remarkable biodiversity. This church, with its medieval architecture and defensive elements, is part of a landscape where nature and historical heritage mingle closely, offering an overview of rural and religious life in Périgord throughout the centuries.
