Origin and history

The church Saint-François-de-Sales de Bandol was built between 1747 and 1749, in the Var department, under the initial authority of the Bishop of Marseilles. Consecrated at the end of the works, it became an independent parish in 1751. Its history is closely linked to the local maritime community, reflected by its successive enlargements: a lateral nave dedicated to sailors in 1772 (as Saint Elme), followed by a second for black penitents in 1776 (as Saint Vincent de Paul). These extensions respond to the growing needs of local corporations, including the Saint-Elme Brotherhood, founded in 1751 to bring together the sea trades under the protection of their patron saint.

The confraternity of Saint-Elme, the first foresight fund for Bandolais sailors, organizes annual commemorations, including a procession on 2 June between the church and the port. Originally dependent on the diocese of Marseilles, the church is now under the control of Fréjus-Toulon. Its architectural heritage, including the main façade and the bell tower, has been protected since its inscription in historic monuments on 23 August 1990. The adjacent squares (Estienne-d'Orves and Liberté) and two fountains are also part of this protection.

The building illustrates the religious and social importance of parish churches in Provence in the 18th century, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering for corporations, and an identity symbol for a city facing the sea. Its architecture and history reflect the economic and community dynamics of Bandol, where maritime activities were central. Today, the church remains a major witness to the region's religious and maritime heritage.
