Origin and history

The church of Saint-Avit-de-Tardes, placed under the patronage of the bishop of Limoges, consists of a unique nave of three bays with a straight bedside, built at the end of the 13th century. It was later completed by a southern chapel and raised in the 14th or 15th centuries, with an irregular apparatus suggesting a fortification. The western gate, accessible by a three-step walkway, presents a broken line adorned with vestments and columns with capitals carved with palmettes and hooks. A bas-relief representing a blessed bishop overcomes the bays housing the bells, while a fragment of Gallo-Roman monument is embedded in the north wall.

The former priory, adjacent to the north of the church, forms a set of two houses in return around a courtyard. Its entrance gate, marked by pilasters surmounted by pyramids and balls, bears witness to a neat civil architecture. The building, classified as a Historical Monument in 1963, retains traces of successive transformations, reflecting its evolution between the 13th and 16th centuries. The presence of Gallo-Roman and medieval elements makes it an emblematic site of the Limousin heritage.

The location of the whole, in the Creuse, is attested by its entry in the Merimée inventory under the code INSEE 23182. Although the geographical accuracy is considered satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), the exact address corresponds to cadastre section E, parcel 6. A communal property, the site raises questions about its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation), not specified in available sources.
