Origin and history

Saint-Friard Church is a Catholic religious building located in Besné, in the Loire-Atlantique department. It is distinguished by its cruciform plan, with a nave finished by a choir and a transept, surmounted by a square bell tower above the gate. The building is dedicated to Friard d'Indret, a Catholic saint associated with the evangelization of the Nantes region in the sixth century, alongside Saint Second. The stained glass windows illustrate the life of these two religious figures.

The present church, built in 1880, replaces an older building. It houses several objects protected as historical monuments, including granite sarcophagi attributed to Saint Friard and Saint Second (VIth century), 16th century baptismal fonts, and liturgical elements of the 17th and 18th centuries. These objects bear witness to the heritage and religious richness of the place.

Among the remarkable elements are a reliquary in painted wood dedicated to the Saints Fiacre and Second, a statuette from the Virgin to the Child, and a box with holy tin oils. These rooms, mainly dating from the 18th century, reinforce the historical and spiritual character of the building. The crypt, home to the sarcophagus, is an emblematic space linked to the local tradition.
