Origin and history
The church of Saint-Geniès de Benque-Dessous, located in the commune of Benque-Dessous-et-Dessus (Haute-Garonne, Occitanie), is a Roman Catholic church built in the 12th century. It underwent major changes in the 17th and 19th centuries, particularly in its arched vault and murals. The church is distinguished by its simple basilical plane, with a single nave extended by a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four. Its bell tower-wall, typical of rural architecture, is pierced by curved bays to the west. The building incorporates Gallo-Roman elements in use, such as funerary cippes visible on the southern façade, showing an ancient occupation of the site.
The interior preserves a rich 17th century painted decoration, including a representation of God in majesty surrounded by angel musicians in the apse, as well as figures of Salome and Saint John the Baptist in the choir. These frescoes, partially restored in the 19th century, coexist with a sculpted novelist and a tympanum decorated with a chrism. Two of the re-used burial cupps are classified as historic monuments in their own right. The church, first mentioned in 1289, was listed in the inventory of historical monuments on December 6, 1995 for its heritage and artistic interest.
The restoration campaigns aimed to standardize painted decorations, while preserving original elements such as the dove of the Holy Spirit in a cloud, at the cul-de-four of the apse. The lateral walls of the apse are treated as trompe l'oeil, imitating a retable. The building, owned by the commune, illustrates the architectural and liturgical evolution of Occitan rural churches, mixing Romanesque heritage, ancient re-uses and Baroque enrichments. Its location along the 51c departmental road makes it a visible landmark of local heritage.
The re-used elements, such as triangular pediment steles or Gallo-Roman funerary plaque, highlight the historical stratification of the site. These remains, integrated into the medieval structure, offer a material testimony of ancient funeral practices in the region. The stylistic analysis of the paintings made it possible to date precisely the 17th century restoration campaign, during which time the church was adapted to the new post-tridentine liturgical norms.
Saint-Geniès Church plays a central role in the community life of Benque-Dessous-et-Dessus, as evidenced by its heritage protection and its mention in departmental inventories. Its modest but characteristic architecture, combined with its painted decorations and re-used stone elements, makes it an example of the rural religious heritage of Haute-Garonne. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its historical and artistic importance in the Occitan landscape.
